Prime Minister visits Sandhi Exhibition on 22 February 2016

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Sandhi and Yukti exhibitions when he visited BHU on 22 February 2016. SandHI stands for Science and Heritage Initiative, of the IITs with the support of MHRD. Project Varanasi is a part of Sandhi.

Sampark Machine Translation (MT) system was shown with Hindi-Bhojpuri and other Indian languages. PM showed keen interest and asked about the quality level of MT output for Indian languages, comparision with Google, and what if text-to-speech is connected to the output. He also asked about the quality level of English to Hindi MT. (Hindi-Bhojpuri system is developed with the collaboration of IIT BHUBHU, and IIIT Hyderabadconsortium. It is a hybrid system using rule-based techniques together with machine learning, but both based on Computational Paninian Grammar.)

Prof Joy Sen and Prof. Priyadarshi Patnaik of IIT Kharagpur showed the PM the other elements of Sandhi, dealing with culture, Indian thought, and city of Varanasi, on which IIT BHU is collaborating with IIT Kharagpur. The PM got quite interested and discussed various issues and related his own personal experiences of how our heritage knowledge goes out and comes back to the country in the form of technology.

HRD Minister Smriti Irani was extremely happy to see the exhibition and wanted the Sampark MT system to be running under Bharatavani. Later, while addressing the gathering at BHU convocation, she publicly congratulated the people doing good work under the Sandhi project, and said that the need of today is to work combining Science with our Heritage.
