Question: Who is authorized to use the Main Library, IIT (BHU) Varanasi?
Answer: All students, faculty members and staff working with the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) are authorised to use the library. Student alumni, retired staff members and visiting faculties also have the privilege to use the Main Library. However, for availing of the borrowing facilities, users need to enrol themselves with Main Library IIT (BHU) on fulfilling the requisite procedures.

Question: How can an outsider use the Main Library, IIT (BHU)?? 
Answer: Individuals affiliated with corporate bodies or any institution can use the library after producing the letter from their organisation and taking permission from the librarian. The Library will charge for its services as per the rule of the library.

Question: How can a student/faculty member recommend a book for purchase in the library? 
Answer: An authorised user can recommend a book for purchase by filling- in a “Book recommendation from” that can be obtained from the Book Acquisition Division or Circulation counter. The form should be routed through your Departmental Library Committee with the signature of the Head of Department. OR Click here to download the book requisition form.

Question: Can a bound volume of journals be issued to a member?
Answer: As a general practice, the library administration avoids to issue bound volume of periodicals. However, in exceptional cases, a bound volume of journals can be issue to the faculty member for over-night from the circulation counter by detaining their passbook.

Question: Can a current (loose) issue of journals be issued to a library member?
Answer: No, the current (loose) issue of journals is not issued to any category of library member. After taking permission from the librarian, loose issues may be issue to faculty members after detaining their passbook for overnight. The latest issue of journals will not issue in any case.

Question: How can we distinguish reference books from other library collections? Can I get the reference books issued?
Answer: Reference books have been marked by RR on the Top of the Call Number. Reference books may issue to faculty members only for overnight from the circulation counter by detaining their passbook.

Question: What types of documents are kept in the Reference Collection?
Answer: Reference Collection mainly contains, Encyclopedias, Handbook, Dictionaries, Directories, Atlases, Audio, Video and some rare collection.

Question: Is there a fine for late return of books?
Answer: Every category of members are required to pay late fee, as per the late fee structure, if he/she fails to return the books within the prescribed period of time @ Rs 1 per day.

Question: What are the issue/return timings in the library?
Answer: 09:30 AM to 6:00 P M. However, on the availability of circulation counter staff, books may be an issue/return at any time in special cases.

Question: I have lost a book; what am I required to do?
Answer: Immediately consult the circulation counter to know the book detail and then consult to Acquisition Section for the replacement of the book or deposit the price of the book.

Question: If the desired book is not traceable on the shelve, what should I do?
Answer: First contact the concerned person responsible for shelving of books in that area. You may also contact professionals at the counter or In-Charge Circulation Section.

Question: Can I bring my own book or books issued from the library?
Answer: No, you are not allowed to bring the personal book/books issued from the library. Only after the permission of the Gatekeeper and stamping on the personal book with a proper entry on the register you can bring your personal books for reading purposes. In no case issued books are allowed to bring in the library for reading purposes.
