A PERSPECTIVE

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) at Varanasi, which is founded in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College has a glorious history of academic achievements. It was made the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (ITBHU) in 1968. It was in the 10th meeting of IIT Council in 1972 a proposal came to convert ITBHU into IIT. Finally from 20 June 2012 it joined the great galaxy of Indian Institutes of Technology as one of its bright stars with full-fledged status of IIT (BHU). The Institute has in all 14 departments and 3 inter- disciplinary schools. The Institute is establishing its 15th department as Department of Architecture and Planning to start a Five Years Degree Course in Architecture (B.Arch) from July 2019-2020 session.  The architecture creativity is a product of holistic fusion of Arts, Humanities with Science and Technology within the Economics power of the society. The IIT (BHU) has the privilege to enrich the architectural education with all these inter- disciplinary complementary subjects set in their traditionally culturally developed heritage campus of Banaras Hindu University. The distinct architectural character of BHU edifices and their unique redial layout will be  ever inspiring to budding students of architecture

Past instincts

The Department of Architecture and Planning at IITBHU in Varanasi derives its spirit from the great movements that happened during the initial stages of making of this great Banaras Hindu University. Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviyaji requested Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore for help in designing this great campus. In response, Gurudev Tagor delegated architect Suren Kar and great sculptor-artist Asit Haldar from Shantiniketan with a team to design the first few buildings and propose the serene green Ashramic layout. They also designed the Kala Bhawan and the Sangeet Bhawan in the eternal Ashramic pattern of India. They had great teaching and patronage under Sister Nivedita, Painter E.B. Havell, and Art historian Stella Kramrisch. At a later date, Ms. Alice Boner, a great art historian, painter and designer, and a friend of dance maestro Pandit Uday Shankar (brother of great sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar) came and joined Kala Bhawan. The renowned ecologist Sir Patrick Geddes of Edinburgh, a common friend of Swami Vivekananda and Tagore, also came and contributed to the incipient ideas of a City Plan for Banaras. All these three movements inspired the thinking behind a School of Architecture and Design at BHU. The work of these stalwarts, indeed is our most valuable asset and guiding spirit to look forward to the opening a full-fledged Department of Architecture, Planning and Design at IITBHU.

Present instincts

The Department of Architecture at IIT BHU being in Varanasi has distinct features to motivate students of architecture with creative minds. In essence, humane architecture is a product of cultural heritage and technology. The city of Varanasi, popularly called as Banaras, is known all over the world as the cultural city of India. The city’s vibrancy lies in the juxtaposition of creative, intellectual, and spiritual pursuits ranging from performing arts to philosophical discourses. The ghats of Varanasi and their massive facades are world famous not only for their religiosity but also famous for their awesome panoramic architectural beauty due to its unique formation showcasing unity in diversity. Its beauty lies in its densified as well as equally mystified compositions of variety of small and big cubical, rectangular and conical building forms built in an offsetting manner. The conical uprising form of the temples’ shikharas adds undulating beauty to the entire silhouette of the facades. Some of the giant edifices are of great historical and architectural values. The formation of these Ghats ideally showcases the fusion of space and form and how they coexist. This incredible creation of the Ghats is an eternal inspiration for enhancing the creative minds of budding architects with culturally innovative ideas. The city of Banaras has been included in one of India’s challenging program of creating 100 smart cities. Hence Banaras is and will remain engaged for the next 15 to 20 years in making a variety of infrastructural projects from micro to macro levels. This means generating technological solutions created by architects and planners and engineers. This will truly be a golden opportunity for the department to develop these architectural projects with modern technological components.

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING

A beginning

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), at the cusp of its centenary and adorned with the enriching diversity of the great Banaras Hindu University, has determined to establish a new Department of Architecture, Planning and Design. This will be the first Department in any IIT that will cover all the three multi-hued disciplines. With a strong tradition of pedagogy and excellent development of professional skills, the department is launching an academic program based on cutting–edge ideas and innovative approaches to develop humane architecture. The academic program is organized to promote an enhanced teaching and learning experience. It intends to give the students in-depth technical knowledge, experiential learning through state of the art laboratories and freedom to apply their creative minds to the hilt. Architecture, being a multi disciplinary course, the department will draw strength from civil engineering, electrical and mechanical Engineering, departments of humanities, fine arts and social sciences.

Development Phases:

The department is launching a five years degree course in Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) with a humble beginning of 20 intakes in the first year and from second year onward 40 students will add the intake each year. By the end of two years the full intake will be of 120 students. The syllabus, intake, faculty and facilities are of IIT standard and satisfy the Council of Architecture (COA) norms. The under graduate degree course in Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and the post graduate degree course in Master of Urban Design (M.U.D.) and Master of urban and rural planning (M.U.R.P.) will start within a span of two years.
