Biography
Dr. Dhoble joined the School of Biochemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi as an Assistant Professor in January 2021. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani from 2019 to 2021. Dr. Dhoble obtained B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from Laxminarayan Institute of Technology - LIT Nagpur - one of the oldest (est. 1942) and renowned government institute (NAAC A+) in central India dedicated to Chemical Engineering & Technology. He later moved to the US to obtain M.S. in the area of anaerobic digestion from the University of Florida. His M.S. was partly funded by NASA (Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX, USA under Cooperative Agreement NCC9 -110) where his team has pioneered the design and operation of bio-digesters for NASA’s upcoming moon mission which received media attention worldwide. Later, he moved to one of the top engineering universities in the US - the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) to earn a Ph.D. in the area of microbiome dynamics in anaerobic systems.
Dr. Dhoble aided in bringing the NSF/USDA EAGER grant to continue a cross-disciplinary Postdoc at UIUC simultaneously working on collaborative projects with US Army Center for Environmental Health Research (USACEHR) during 2016-19. His skills and interests are core to the design and operation of bio-digesters, complex microbial community dynamics, environmental nanotoxicity, cytometric fingerprinting, and machine learning (CFML), which he applies to sustainable bioprocessing and a biosystems approach to the food, water, energy nexus. He has won a couple of highly competitive grants in the US and has got a rigorous 8-semesters interdisciplinary teaching experience at UIUC. Dr. Dhoble has been recognized as a ‘Leader of Tomorrow’ by Global Biotech Revolution at Cambridge University and received several research and excellence in teaching awards.
Dr. Dhoble’s research group “J.E.E.W.A.N.U." (Sanskrit for 'particles of life'/'microbes') which stands for Judicious Engineering of microbiomes for Enhanced sanitation & Water resources, Agriculture and National health Upliftment is building on unique inter-and cross-disciplinary Chemical and Biochemical Engineering approaches, skills in the emerging fields of ‘microbiomes’, 'cytometrics' and ‘machine learning’ with a goal to pursue practical, actionable, low-cost solutions to pressing societal problems and sustainable rural development.
On a personal note, Dr. Dhoble’s hometown is Nagpur (Maharashtra), India. In his personal time, Dr. Dhoble enjoys reading about how ancient cultures worldwide developed practices based around microbes. He also enjoys cooking exotic dishes every once in a while.
Dr. Dhoble loves interacting with students on academic, career, and other matters. Please feel free to get in touch.
Best wishes!

Motivation:
Microbiomes rule the world (and possibly space)! To achieve foundational changes in the understanding of health and wellness, there is a recognized need to advance our understanding of the key players in our ecosystems, viz. microbial communities. Furthermore, minimally invasive, non-genomic engineering of microbiomes would be crucial for restoring ecological balance in natural (soils, river, gut) and engineered (anaerobic digestion, fermentation) ecosystems. Low-cost next-generation sequencing (NGS) may not be high throughput enough to resolve dynamic changes in the structure of the microbiome over time and there is a need to develop non-invasive tools complementary to genomic approaches for designing effective operational and engineering strategies. The structure and function of microbial communities manifest as unique combinations, or ‘Cytometric Fingerprints’ of characteristics such as viability, metabolic activity, and morphology.
Our main interests lie in exploring the cytometric fingerprinting and machine learning-driven microbiome engineering approaches complementary to analysis intensive genomic approaches for shaping microbiota to alter the ecosystem of interest. In particular, we’re interested in developing a strong research program with the Judicious Engineering of microbiomes for Enhanced sanitation & Water resources, Agriculture and National health Upliftment: “JEEWANU”(Sanskrit for "particles of life").
To investigate this, we are developing a novel flow cytometry-based label-free, high throughput technique, which is sensitive to spatial and temporal changes in the structure and function of microbiomes. Our previous work suggested that cytometric fingerprinting could be used for a rapid, high-throughput understanding of microbiome dynamics thereby opening doors to in-situ microbiome engineering for actionable benefits. Following are some of the specific applications of microbiome dynamics that we are currently interested in:
- Sanitation & Water Resources (Anaerobic Digestion, Digeponics, River Conservation)
- Food & Agriculture (Milk Foam, Soil Testing, AgroProcessing, Aquaponics)
- Public Health (Mastitis, Cytometric Fingerprinting Machine Learning-CFML)
