A Brief Resume of Dr. Aarif Jamal
Dr. Aarif Jamal, is currently a Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi. He graduated from Banaras Hindu University obtaining First class in the B.Sc.(Hons. ) in geology in 1981. He obtained his Master's "s degree from the Banaras Hindu University securing first class in Geology in 1984 . He obtained his Doctorate from the Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, B.H.U. in 1990. The title of his Ph.D. thesis was “Environmental Impact of Opencast Coal Mining on Air and Water Quality and its Management.” Having a keen interest in academics & research activities,  he joined the Mining Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University as a lecturer in January 1993. Dr. Jamal has contributed about 30 technical papers in International/National Journals and about 30 technical papers in International/National seminar symposia/proceedings etc. in the area of Acid Mine Drainage, rock and coal characterization, mineral processing, and mine waste management. He is an active member in editing five seminar proceedings books entitled Mining in Public & Private Sector in 21st Century” (1998), “Environmental Management in Mines” (2003), “  “ “Environmental Management in Mining & Allied Industries” (2008), Present Technology and Safety Scenario in Mining & Allied Industries” (2013),  and “Environmental Management and Current Practices in Mining and Allied Industries” (2104).
He was awarded Dr. Rajendra Prasad Memorial Medal 2002, By the Institution of Engineers India on technical papers and first prize in “TECHNEX” on the model in environmental category IIT, BHU. First prize for best paper in International workshop on WATER – 2006 at NEERI, Nagpur, Shiksha Ratan Award by Friendship Society of India, Shane Banaras by Islamic Foundation of India & Rashtriya Pratibha Award by INDO SOCIO DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, NEW  DELHI in  2018 . Dr. Jamal guided three Ph.D. and more than 30 M. Tech dissertations.  He has also guided three R&D CSIR & DST projects as Co-investigator and Principal Investigator. He convened two national-level seminars and one international seminar as convener and chairman besides two as chairman and co-convener. He has more than 25 years of teaching, R & D, and administrative experience at the department and institute levels.  He was head of the department of  MINING  ENGINEERING from  1 March  2012  to  April 2016 for more than four year.
