Dr. BN Dwivedi worked as an Institute Professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) until 30th June 2020 after he superannuated as Professor (HAG) in May-June 2015. He has been a research physicist at the University of California, San Diego (1980-1981); a royal society visitor at the Glasgow University (1989); Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellow at Glasgow, Cambridge, and Oxford universities (1990-1991); a visiting scientist at Max-Planck-Institut für Sonnensystemforschung (MPS), Germany for over 25 years (1991-2015).

He has over forty years of teaching experience at BTech/MTech/PhD levels, and broad experience in Solar & Space Plasma Physics, with involvement in almost all the major solar space experiments, including Skylab, Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, Hinode, STEREO, SDO, and IRIS. He is also a member of ‘Science Working Group’ of VELC and SUIT experiments to be flown on board the ISRO's Aditya-L1 mission.

Dwivedi is an outstanding science teacher at a wide range of levels. He is unusual (almost unique) among science teachers in being simultaneously an active professional research scientist at a high international level. His obvious passion for understanding the mysteries of the Sun (a grand physics laboratory in the sky) is a major motivation for his research on solar phenomena. His deep and wide professional knowledge of these, informs and authenticates his innovative and interactive class lectures, pedagogical and popular expositions. He has supervised/co-supervised/mentored several PhDs and projects/dissertations at BTech/MTech/PhD levels.

He has published over 300 research papers, reviews, book chapters and articles in the reputed Indian/International journals/magazines/newspapers. He has been honoured with several national and international awards specifically,  National Award for ‘Outstanding Efforts in Science and Technology Communication’ (2005); Indian National Science Academy: Indira Gandhi Prize for ‘Popularization of Science’ (2011); ‘Popular Writing Award’ for solar physics by the American Astronomical Society/Solar Physics Division (2004).

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the SUMER/SOHO science, of which he had been an Associate Scientist from the non-European countries, he was honoured with the prestigious 'MPAE Gold Pin’ in 1999 by the Max-Planck Institute, Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany. He has been traveling widely giving invited talks/seminars/colloquia at premier national and international institutes: symposia/ seminars/colloquia. He is also extensively involved in science communication and pedagogical research.

Dwivedi has written a cover story feature article in Scientific American (2001) and also in its special issue (2003), guest-edited a solar physics issue of ‘Current Science’ (1999), and his edited book ‘Dynamic Sun’ published by the Cambridge University Press (2003, 2007) has received laudatory reviews. He has also edited the book on ‘Physics of the Sun and its Atmosphere’, published by the World Scientific, Singapore (2008). His book ‘Lecture Notes on Maxwell's Equations’ has been published by the LAMBERT Academic Publishing (2013). His work on “Coronal heating by Alfvén waves", has been cited in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona).

He has co-authored a seminal contribution in the Nature Scientific Reports (2017) which unravels the mystery of ‘coronal heating’ and is cited in Wikipedia:
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfvén_wave). He has also co-authored a discovery research paper on "Confined pseudo-shocks as an energy source for the active solar corona", published in Nature Astronomy (2018).

Recently, he has co-authored yet another discovery research paper, “On the Observations of Rapid Forced Reconnection in the Solar Corona” published in The Astrophysical Journal (2019): a magnetic explosion the likes of which have never been seen before. He has co-authored a seminal contribution, "On the radial acceleration of disc galaxies" published in the Monthly Notices Roy. Astron. Soc. (2020), essentially invoking their “Impact Models of Gravitational and Electrostatic Forces” (2019) – taking account of gravitons losing energy and momentum when interacting with baryonic matter.

Dwivedi is an elected member of the International Astronomical Union, Astronomical Society of India, and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He has served as a member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports: a Nature Research Journal (http://www.nature.com/srep/). He has also served as Head of Physics Dept., Prof-in-Charge of Faculty Affairs IIT (BHU), Chairman of the BHU Alumni Cell, etc. In addition, he has designed and conducted several interdisciplinary elective courses that are well received and highly commended by students of engineering and technology.

Scientific Achievement:
Dwivedi’s earliest research contributions dating from 1978 are on solar spectra, an old and yet new, but always fertile, the field of physics as well as a source of physical knowledge about the Sun and the Universe. He has been pursuing commendable research in solar physics for the last four decades, with his continued involvement in almost all the major solar space experiments, e.g., Skylab, Yohkoh, SoHO, TRACE, RHESSI, Japan’s solar spacecraft Hinode, NASA’s SDO, and IRIS. His research interests include the ‘Physics and Diagnostics of Solar X-ray and EUV Emission Processes’ as well as ‘Waves and Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere’. He is an outstanding science Teacher at a wide range of levels. He is unusual (almost unique) among science teachers in being simultaneously an active professional research scientist at a high international level. His obvious passion for understanding the mysteries of the Sun is a major motivation for his research on solar phenomena. His deep and wide professional knowledge of these, informs and authenticates his innovative class lectures, pedagogical and popular expositions.

He has made significant contributions to the theory and modeling of solar plasma in optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma-ray, and atomic spectroscopy – especially in the field of diagnostics of electron and proton beams and of the plasmas they heat. He has also made seminal contributions in the areas of ‘wave activity in the solar atmosphere’ and in ‘science communication’. Some of his original contributions include:

Physics and diagnostics of solar EUV and X-ray emission processes: The inference of electron density and temperature structure of astrophysical and laboratory plasmas from diagnostic line ratios is a problem of universal importance. The physical importance of these line diagnostics lies in the influence of density and temperature in the plasma process being considered, whether thermonuclear fusion, transport coefficients, energy transport, magnetic reconnection, particle acceleration, etc. Prof Dwivedi obtained new results on many spectral line ratio diagnostics, which formed the basis for several observing sequences from the CDS and SUMER instruments onboard the SoHO spacecraft. He developed a new density and temperature model of coronal holes which is the best available model to date. His original findings on the abundance anomaly, FIP-effect in coronal structures, and identification of new emission lines and their potential diagnostic applications have been highly commended. He has also made an original contribution to the mathematical formulation of  ‘diagnostics of inhomogeneous structures’. The most comprehensive reviews on the ‘Physics of ultraviolet emissions: observations and interpretations’ have been published in two parts in Space Science Reviews. His seminal work on active region loops observed by EIS/Hinode has been published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Physics of solar flares: Way back in 1984, Dwivedi discovered that the peaks of hard X-ray emission coincide with penetration of the emitting flare loops into penumbrae of sunspots, which was a landmark new result at the time in the understanding of particle acceleration in solar flares. This frequently cited research finding was confirmed by the SMM spacecraft. His seminal work on gamma-radiation and white-light flares have also been highly commended (1982). His work on “Confined Partial Filament Eruption and its Reformation within a Stable Magnetic Flux Rope” has been published in The Astrophysical Journal (2014).

Wave activity in the solar atmosphere: Prof Dwivedi’s fundamental contributions (Astron.&Astrophys., 2004, 2005) on the emission line broadening, and/or narrowing; and, the work on the dissipation of Alfvén waves in the solar wind source region (Solar Phys., 2006) have provided new clues to understanding the coronal heating and solar wind acceleration mechanisms. New results on the energetics of long-period slow MHD waves in the solar wind source region have been reported (New Astronomy, 2008). He has also investigated intensity oscillations in the solar chromosphere and the corona which establish the signature of magneto-acoustic wave propagation above the network, proposing that field-free cavity areas under bipolar magnetic canopies, in the vicinity of a magnetic network, most likely serve as resonators for the magneto-acoustic waves (Astron.&Astrophys. Lett., 2008). He detected sausage oscillations in cool post flare loop (Monthly Notices Roy. Astron. Soc., 2008) and the first signature of slow acoustic oscillations in the non-flaring coronal loop (New Astronomy, 2010). He showed the leakage of 5 min oscillations to be significant for heating the Sun’s atmosphere locally (Monthly Notices Roy. Astron. Soc., 2010). ‘Observation of intensity oscillations above X-ray bright points (XBPs) from Hinode/XRT: Signature of MHD oscillations in the solar corona’ has been published in the Monthly Notices Roy. Astron. Soc. (2011). He has published a seminal paper on ‘Possible Signature of Alfvén Wave Dissipation in the Localized Magnetic Funnels of the Equatorial Solar Corona’ in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan (2014). He published a paper on ‘Magnetohydrodynamic Seismology of a Coronal Loop System by the First Two Modes of Standing Kink Waves’ in The Astrophysical Journal (2015).

His work on “Coronal heating by Alfvén waves", has been cited in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona). He has co-authored a seminal contribution in the Nature Scientific Reports (2017) which unravels the mystery of ‘coronal heating’ and is cited in Wikipedia: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfvén_wave). He has also co-authored a discovery research paper on "Confined pseudo-shocks as an energy source for the active solar corona", published in Nature Astronomy (2018).  Recently, he has co-authored yet another discovery research paper, “On the Observations of Rapid Forced Reconnection in the Solar Corona” in The Astrophysical Journal (2019): a magnetic explosion the likes of which have never been seen before.

Physics of red/blue-shifted emission in the Sun’s atmosphere: Prof  Dwivedi has been investigating the physics of red- and /or blue-shifted emission in the Sun’s atmosphere. His work on the redshifted footpoints of coronal loops (Annales Geophysicae, 2008, and the redshifted network contrast of transition region emission (Astron.&Astrophys. Lett., 2008) seems to be a direct consequence of the prevailing global mass transport in the Sun’s atmosphere.

An impact model of Newton's law of gravitation: Gravity, massive particles, photons and Shapiro delay: The far-reaching gravitational force, in the approximation of Newton's law of gravitation, is described by a heuristic model with hypothetical massless particles propagating at the speed of light in vacuum and transferring momentum and energy between physical entities through interactions on a local basis. The objections raised against this idea are dispelled by invoking the Special Theory of Relativity, considering non-local interactions, and replacing the shielding concept by a secular mass increase of massive bodies. This impact model of gravity is applied to particles with relative motions at slow and relativistic speeds. Based on this model, a gravitational interaction mode is then conceived between photons and massive particles. This implies a deflection perpendicular to the propagation direction of a photon twice as large as expected from the mass-energy relation of photons, in accordance with observations and the General Theory of Relativity. The longitudinal interaction is compatible with the energy and momentum conservation principles applied to massless entities, and the results are consistent with the observed Shapiro delay (Astrophys. Space Sci., 2013). In addition, his seminal contributions on “On the gravitational redshift”, “Secular perihelion advances of the inner planets and asteroid Icarus”, “Photon in a cavity -- a Gedankenexperiment”, and “On the potential energy in a gravitationally bound two-body system”have been published in New Astronomy (2014, 2015) and “Anomalous Earth flybys of spacecraft” in Astrophys. Space Sci. (2015).

He has also co-authored a seminal contribution, "On the radial acceleration of disc galaxies" published in the May 2020 issue of the Monthly Notices Roy. Astron. Soc., essentially invoking their “Impact Models of Gravitational and Electrostatic Forces” (2019) – taking account of gravitons losing energy and momentum when interacting with baryonic matter.

Science Communication:
The most prominent contribution here is the first cover story feature article on ‘The Paradox of the Sun’s Hot Corona’ in the June 2001 issue of Scientific American, which was so greatly appreciated that its updated version has been republished in the Scientific American special edition, in 2003. Some of his notable articles include:  ‘Will the Sun Storm Today?’ in the April 2006 issue of Astronomy Now (a leading UK magazine), ‘Blowing in the Supersonic Wind’ in the April 2007 issue of Scientific American India, ‘Lightning on Venus’ in the March 2008  issue of Science Reporter, ‘What makes the Sunshine?’  in the November 2010 issue of Science Reporter,‘Coronal Heating by Alfvén Waves’ in Current Science (2010), etc.
In a major effort to motivate young minds in colleges and universities towards space science, he organized a National Workshop in November 2006 at Meerut College. Consequently, a pedagogical-updated-modern view of “Physics of the Sun and its Atmosphere” in the form of a book has been published by the World Scientific, Singapore (2008). He organized an interactive seminar on the total solar eclipse (TSE) in Varanasi on 21 July 2009 at IT-BHU. On the Eclipse Day (22 July 2009), he observed the Sun from an eclipse science camp at the Saamne Ghat, Varanasi and educated thousands of people.
