RESEARCH INTEREST:
I  firmly  believe  that  today’s  health  challenges  can  be  addressed  by  collaborative perspectives with disappearing subject boundaries. Neurobiological processes are inherently complex and needs multidisciplinary research approach encompassing of behavioral, biochemical, molecular and electrophysiological tools for the better understanding of the neurochemical and signaling pathways involved in neuropathological conditions.   As an independent researcher and a faculty, my interest is to establish a collaborative research program in behavioral and molecular neuroscience dedicated to understanding the various neurodegenerative disorders and the signaling pathway involved so that better drug candidates can be developed by targeting the disrupted neuro-machinery.
Current background: I have been trained in different behavioral, biochemical and molecular biology techniques to study the signaling pathways involved in chronic pain and neurodegenerative disorders. During my PhD in neuro-pharmacology, I was able to identify key signaling pathways involved in alcoholic neuropathy and associated cognitive deficits, diabetic neuropathy and muscoskeletol pain. My PhD research work was published in peer reviewed international journals such as International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology; Journal of Neurochemistry; Pharmacology, Biochemistry & Behavior; PAIN & The Journal of Pain, and is being highly cited. During postdoc I studied different epigenetical mechanisms involved in nerve injury-induced chronic pain, role of MrgX1 receptors in neuropathic pain, epigenetical modifications in stress-induced transition from acute to chronic pain and role of mTOR pathway in morphine-induced hyperalgesia and tolerance and we published these findings recently in Nature Neuroscience, Proceedings of National Academy of Science (PNAS), U.S.A and The Journal of Clinical investigation. With my postdoc mentors Prof. Srinivasa N. Raja and Prof. Yun Guan at Johns Hopkins University, U.S.A, I investigated different spinal and supra-spinal mechanisms involved in peripheral opioid-induced amelioration of spontaneous ongoing pain (affective component of pain) after spinal and sciatic nerve injury by using conditioned place preference. I also worked on investigating how different spinal and supra-spinal mechanisms plays role in spinal cord stimulation-induced analgesia and relief from ongoing spontaneous pain. Apart from this I also studied the role of MOR and DOR heterodimerization in peripheral opioid-induced tolerance and hyperalgesia which is currently a big clinical problem. Recently, my research interest is focused on kinesin mediated regulation of nociceptors and dissecting out the different neuronal circuitries involved in pain relief and reward so that better analgesic drugs devoid of drug addiction can be developed.
