The ARCIS of Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi was created from the Steel Development Fund, Ministry of Steel, Government of India with a financial sanction of Rs. 30.98 Cr of which Rs. 3.9 was released in March 2016 . The centre is attached to Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT(BHU), Varanasi.

3.Objectives of the Centre:
The long term objectives of the centre is to foster teaching and advanced research in emerging areas of ferrous metallurgy. These are (i) creation of well qualified manpower with the advanced skill in the area of raw material processing, modeling of reduction processes, melting and remelting as well as Thermomechanical processing of steels under various temperature and deformation conditions, creation of knowledge base that can be utilized by steel industries with suitable scaling-ups.

4.Activities:
Agglomeration of ore fines for suitable applications (i.e Sinter, Pellets, Briquettes, Sponge iron, DRI especially in RHF etc.) to increases the output of iron production. Utilization of wastes from Iron & Steel industries (ie. iron ore slime, dust catcher dust, mining blue dust etc.) into profitable/marketable products. Use of renewable source of energy (waste wood, agriculture waste etc) for reduction of iron to control the emission of green house gases.
Modeling of direct reduction processes of iron ore fines with non-coking coals, decarburization, desulphurization, dephosphorization in order to improve quality and productivity of steelmaking processes.
Development of strong, hard and tough bulk nanostructured steel by thermomechanical processing. Development of advanced steels. Development of ultrahigh strength steels, ultrafine-grained steel for high strength structural application, ultra high strength pearlitic steel, high nitrogen stainless steels for structural applications.
Ultrasonic shot peening for steel technology, nanotechology for iron and steels, understanding precipitates, defects and interfaces in steels and development of coated steels, bulk amorphous steels, and microcrystalline steels for electrical applications. Development of oxide dispersion strengthened stainless steels.
